I've started doing my creative writing in 450-word bursts. This started by accident and continued because that has been a bit of a sweet spot in the anxiety-sphere. That is, it's enough length that it's hard to bullshit for that long, but short enough that when I've been bullshitting for 100 words and feel like quitting, I can say to myself, "well, that wasn't so bad, I can do that three more times before I give up." And it's as soon as I say, "that wasn't so bad," that things begin to fall into place.

As I continue this practice, though, I've noticed something else. I've noticed myself thinking, "450 words is how long it takes for one thing to change." That is, I've noticed that the size of my burst is affecting my pacing.

I dream one day of being the sort of writer who can change two things in a sitting. (two!!!!!!) Until then, I may see how much flex room there is in my burst size, and how that affects the story.

Now I will go write a quanta.
